Cornelius von Pilgrim mène des fouilles archéologiques annuelles sur le site d’Éléphantine depuis 1986. En 2000, il a mis sur pied un programme de recherches supplémentaire sur la rive est d'Assouan où une surveillance permanente des activités de construction a été introduite et, depuis lors, des fouilles de sauvetage systématiques sont menées dans la ville moderne. Depuis 2003, il est directeur du Swiss Institute for Architectural and Archaeological Research on Ancient Egypt dont le siège est au Caire.

Résumé: Besides the temples and communal spaces, it is above all the residential districts that can convey a picture of life in an Egyptian town. Each house represents a microcosm of its own. However, among the main challenges in urban archaeology is the identification of the actual use of individual rooms or entire buildings. Many working processes and activities of daily life do not leave reliable traces or may have been removed by later activities or by a redesigning of the house. The lecture will present an overview on the results of the excavations in House 55, the best-preserved house in Elephantine from the second millennium. It has provided a wealth of new insights into the living conditions and domestic architecture of the 18th Dynasty.
